Aesop and Menippus

Aesop and Menippus

Technical details

  • Author Francisco de Goya y Lucientes
  • Title Aesop and Menippus
  • Timeline 1778
  • Technique Oil on canvas

Description

The fabulist Aesop and the cynic philosopher Menippus are two miniature copies made by Goya in ca. 1778 of the originals by Velázquez that hung in the royal palace in Madrid at the time. During his first years in Madrid, Goya studied this exceptional 17th-century master painter from Seville, whom he admired and learnt so much from. Goya used these paintings as the models for his two etchings made of the same figures in 1778, which are also on display in this room. The way in which the paintings were executed demonstrates the style used by this Aragonese painter during that time.
