Description

Basque Grandmother and Granddaughter, a work by Valentín de Zubiaurre, is a good example of how the so-called Regionalist painters incorporated new colours and techniques of painting in the early 20th century in order to describe the customs and peoples of Spain, in this case the Basques. The gravity of the grandmother, who carries a basket filled with apples recently picked from her orchard, contrasts with the liveliness of her granddaughter, who has picked the last of the roses at the beginning of autumn. The background landscape of the Basque Country hills and thick clouds, in keeping with Zubiaurre's style, highlights the two well-defined figures that portray old age and youth.
