Castilian Landscape
Technical details
Description
Castilian Landscape by Aureliano de Beruete shows the beautiful sparseness of the Castilian plateau, the Meseta, under spring skies. The landscape was painted from nature, and involved the use of lengthened brushstrokes with little paint, producing an effect similar to Impressionism. It was made in the final years of this painter who was closely associated with the Regenerationist spirit of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza (Free Educational Institution). Small dark splotches represent people strolling or seated on the green meadow surrounding the village or town, distinguished in the background by splotches of ochre.
