Description

Santiago Lagunas, an artist who was prominent in spreading Abstract painting throughout Spain from Zaragoza, achieved in this 1951 painting one of his most successful and striking works. Over an undefined background, a series of black and mainly curved brushstrokes define spaces filled with ochres, greens, blues and brilliant yellows and reds. Through these geometric spaces, Lagunas wanted to reconstruct the figures of his two daughters, who were full of vitality and joy. María Pilar is suggested by the head with one eye and large bows on the side, and by her hands. The figure of Ana María is less defined and more abstract.
