Description

Construction of the Early Holy Chapel, is a preliminary study painted by Antonio González Velázquez (1723-1794), a student of Giaquinto in Rome, for half of the fresco decoration of the dome over the Holy Chapel of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, which was executed in 1752-1753, by the artist from Madrid on his return to Spain from Italy. This study shows an angel pointing towards the left, where the chapel to the Virgin Mary should be built, while above them other angels carry the holy pillar, which, according to tradition, was left by the Virgin when she came to Zaragoza in mortal flesh in AD 40. On the opposite side is a stonemason at work, which would be painted again in a new study that would be recreated on the dome of the church.
