Description

Head of José Camón Aznar is a seminal work in the career of the great Aragonese sculptor Pablo Serrano, a leading member of the El Paso group. It was the first in a series of portraits of figures in the cultural and intellectual life of Spain. He made the piece in 1956, shortly after returning from South America, where he had lived since 1929, first in Argentina and later in Uruguay. In this Expressionist portrait of Camón, Pablo Serrano not only captured the physical features of this distinguished Aragonese art historian – his prominent nose, distinctive thick eyebrows and projecting lower lip – but encapsulated his humanity and temperament, with a gaze of a man lost in thought.
