Description

This outstanding work is by the Aragonese artist Antonio Saura, an important member of the El Paso group and with international renown. Painted in 1962 as part of his "Damas" series, it was made in the Abstract Expressionist style particular to the artist. The head and bust of a woman are defined by means of vigorous black, ochre and grey brushstrokes against a grey background, executed with the restraint and limited colour palette that characterises Saura's paintings. Movement and expression were the manner in which the artist captured on canvas his humanistic ideas, with a dramatic profile that forms an emotional and spiritual connection with Goya's Desastres and Black Paintings.
