Description

The painting Moses Brings Forth Water from a Stone is signed by the Neapolitan painter Scipione Compagno and dates from the middle of the 17th century. It depicts a religious scene, specifically a passage from the Old Testament in which Moses miraculously brings forth water from a stone on Mount Horeb after striking it with his rod, in order to provide water for the Israelites on their way from Egypt to the Promised Land. However, this great open air setting, with the wandering Israelites' tents and a large number of figures wearing different clothes, carrying different objects and in different poses, portrays a scene of daily life in the area around Naples.
