Description

Portrait of a Girl. Pablo Gargallo. Commissioned for a wealthy middle-class family in Barcelona, it is one of the least known works by the Aragonese sculptor. It was signed and dated 1911 in Barcelona, shortly before Gargallo settled in Paris, and the piece shows the aesthetics of Catalan Noucentisme, influenced by Rodin but with great moderation. The portrait is in marble and shows a front view. The girl, who appears to be about fourteen years old, wears a very simple dress, and her pleasant face shows a serene, innocent smile. Gargallo carved her wavy hair with great simplicity, without concessions to ornamentation.
