Description
Portrait of a Seated Man, which was previously attributed to Aert de Gelder, appears to be an early version, rather than a reproduction, of the portrait painted by the Dutch artist Ferdinand Bol in 1642, which is the property of The National Trust and on display at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire, Great Britain. Bol was a student of Rembrandt, and lived in the master's house and studio between 1632 and 1641, the year in which he set up his own studio in Amsterdam. Against an ochre background with a chiaroscuro lighting effect, in the style of Rembrandt, the model, perhaps a wealthy merchant, is seated in an armchair. He is dressed in a sombre black suit, with a wide white ruff and black hat, and holds a glove in his left hand.
