Description
The Portrait of Queen Maria Luisa of Parma, consort of King Charles IV, is a very interesting work. While it was painted in 1789, Goya left it unfinished, later modifying it in about 1799 by updating her clothes to give her an Empire-style dress and a turban-like headdress. He updated her facial features to those of a more mature woman, and he also repainted her left arm, separating it from her body. The queen wears the purple and white ribbon of the Royal Order of Noble Ladies of Queen Maria Luisa, which she created in 1792 for ladies of the Spanish aristocracy. The gold embroidery on her dress was made with a clever use of the brush, which produced optical effects.
