Description

This is possibly the most famous print from the Tauromaquia series. Its protagonist is Juan Apiñani, a famous banderillero from Calahorra. This image shows him performing the salto de la garrocha, pole-vaulting over the charging bull. The composition of the print shows great richness. Like a snapshot, it captures the moment when Apiñani is flying over the animal. The pole divides the scene into two parts: on the right is a void, while on the left are the figures, including the public that is massed in the shady part of the stands. The verticality of the pole contrasts with the horizontal of the bull, the bullfighter and his shadow.
