Description

The Farm Labourer is a bronze study made by Pablo Serrano in 1976 for his “Monument to the farm Labourer from Teruel”, which Ibercaja bestowed on the city of Teruel to mark the centenary of this financial institution in the city. The monument was inaugurated on 5 July 1976 in the Ensanche Park in Teruel. The striking female figure – formed from geometrically-shaped blocks with a chiaroscuro effect, with an Expressionist-style head and face and large, solid hands, typical of Aragonese women farm labourers, who have always taken part in many agricultural tasks by their husbands' sides – is accompanied by a series of farm implements and tools at the base of the statue, which are carried or held by hands, thereby humanising and adding realism to these symbolic elements. Serrano's childhood memories from the village of Crivillén, his birthplace in the province of Teruel, were incorporated into this beautiful figure.
