He was a spanish painter who studied both in his native Valencia and at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid. When he moved to Rome, after winning a gold medal at the Valencia Regional Exhibition, he was able to join Eduardo Rosales’s studio and rub shoulders with other great painters such as Mariano Fortuny. We might describe it as a genre scene in which we see four smiling gypsy women looking kindly at the viewer. These are depictions that conform to the racial stereotype of women: oval faces, full lips and black hair, as well as colourful mantillas.
