Artistic analysis
Mariano Fortuny was an artist with a keen interest in depicting the elderly, which is why his body of work contains numerous examples of this kind of anatomical study. At times he gave his models an almost beggar-like appearance, whilst on other occasions, as in this case, he simply painted them with their torsos bare in the sun, revelling in the contrasts of light through sketchy brushstrokes.
