This is the third portrait of Mariano painted by his grandfather. It expresses Goya’s deep love for his grandson and bears witness to his artistic transformation in the final years of his life.
This is a half-length portrait in which he appears seated in a chair, with a sheet of music blurred in the background. Dressed in a black suit with a wide white lace collar, a black top hat stands out above his head, framing his features. The portrait once again demonstrates Goya’s skill in capturing the subject’s psychology: the boy’s gentle features and attentive expression, with his left hand on his waist while the other holds a piece of paper as if it were a conductor’s baton. It conveys the boy’s lively and tender nature.
