Artistic analysis
This polychrome terracotta work depicts, in the foreground, the Virgin Mary holding the dead Christ in her arms. Christ’s body appears disjointed, and his head is tilted backward. In the background, the silhouette of the towers and walls of Jerusalem can be glimpsed. It departs from the pyramidal composition typical of the Pietà theme, opting instead for a horizontal arrangement of the figures, emphasizing the broken and contorted embrace with which the Virgin holds her son.
