Artistic analysis
Ferdinand Bol was a student of Rembrandt and lived in the master's house and studio between 1632 and 1641, the year in which he set up his own studio in Ámsterdam.
Appears to be an early version, rather than a reproduction, of the portrait painted by the dutch artist Ferdinand Bol in 1642, which is the property of The National Trust and on display at Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire, Great Britain. Against an ochre background with a chiaroscuro effect, very similar to Rembrandt’s style, the subject, perhaps a wealthy merchant, is seated in an armchair, wearing a sober black suit with a wide white ruff and a black hat. He is holding a glove in his left hand.
