Artistic analysis

This small sculpture was most likely the image that crowned the tabernacle or Eucharistic display case of one of the altarpieces created by the artist. This work marked his transition to baroque sculpture in Castile from his large workshop in Valladolid.

The piece depicts Christ in a classical contrapposto pose, perfectly showcasing the figure’s anatomy, with a red cloak modestly covering him, preserving the work’s modesty. Also, this image of Christ’s victory over death shows the artist’s mastery of the face’s sober expression.

The piece is designed to be viewed from below; for this reason, Christ tilts his head to one side, gazing serenely at the viewer, who can thus contemplate the full beauty of his Glory and Resurrection.
