Artistic analysis

It conveys a sense of grandeur by depicting the figure in the foreground in a mannerist pose, set against an idealized mountainous landscape with a low horizon line.

He is elegantly dressed and bears his regalia; on his head he wears the royal crown and mantle, as he proclaimed himself king of the province of Baetica in Visigothic Hispania. In his right hand he raises a cross, and a halo of sanctity surrounds his head, indicating that he died a martyr. Other attributes—the instruments of his martyrdom—include the axe he holds in his left hand, with which he was beheaded in A.D. 585 for refusing to renounce Catholicism and rejecting the Arianism practiced by the visigoths, and the chains binding his feet.
