Artistic analysis
Luis Egidio Meléndez studied painting in his father’s studio; although his body of work was varied, he was particularly noted for his still lifes.
This piece is an example of utmost austerity, as it does not depict a lavish kitchen like other still lifes, but rather represents a humble home rendered in Velázquez-inspired colors. It was created toward the end of his career, allowing us to see the refined style and meticulous detail he cultivated throughout his life. At the center of the composition is a Castilian vase with two handles; behind it, we catch a glimpse of a metal saucepan resting against the painting’s sole source of light—a white, intricately rendered piece of bread, depicted with great detail.
The brown and ochre tones enhance the sense of simplicity.
