Artistic analysis

The figure portrayed is Don Miguel de Múzquiz y Goyeneche (1719–1785), the first Count of Gausa, a title created by Charles III in 1783 in recognition of his outstanding service as Minister of Finance. One of his main initiatives was the creation of the Bank of San Carlos (now the Bank of Spain). Múzquiz was a friend of Goya’s, and this is one of the first official portraits the painter created at court.
