Artistic analysis

Saint Joachim and Saint Anne were part of a series of murals painted by Goya shortly after his return from Italy to decorate the chapel of the Palace of the Counts of Sobradiel, which currently houses the Notaries’ Association. They were removed from the wall in 1915 and exhibited on the occasion of the centennial of the painter’s death in 1928.

Saint Anne is kneeling and looking to the left at Saint Joachim; she leans on a staff with her left hand, and a soft beam of light illuminates her face and the front of her body, much like the lighting on Saint Joachim.
