Artistic analysis

In his landscape work, Eugenio Lucas Velázquez developed a particularly evocative style centred on seascapes and maritime motifs, in which the influence of Goya and late romanticism is clearly evident. His seascapes do not seek to provide a precise topographical description, but rather an atmospheric and emotional interpretation of the landscape, where the sea is often depicted as turbulent, shrouded in stormy skies and contrasting light.

Through loose, almost sketchy brushstrokes, Lucas Velázquez constructs scenes of great expressive intensity, in which the seascape becomes a vehicle for conveying moods rather than a faithful representation of reality.
