Given its miniature oval format, the portrait was painted for a cameo or oval portrait frame. It would have been worn by the subject’s fiancée or wife as a pendant or bracelet. The young man is dressed like a French dandy of the time. Goya worked quickly; alla prima. He employed the same painterly techniques he used in his larger-format portraits.
