This is the first official portrait of Charles IV as King of Spain; it is the original prototype that Goya completed and registered between February and April 1789, and from which numerous tracings were made, with exact dimensions. In these copies, only the color of the coats was altered, along with the decorative elements that provided context: drapery, table, and crown; legs were even added to the full-length portraits. The upper body remains identical in all of them.
On his chest he wears the ribbons of the orders of Charles III, and on his lapel he displays the insignia of the Order of the Immaculate Conception.
