This is a preparatory sketch that bears a strong resemblance to the final work. This historical painting depicts King Peter III, standing haughtily on a hilltop and gazing out towards the horizon. He is flanked by his army as they all watch the retreat of the french troops led by Philip the Bold, who had just been defeated at the Battle of Las Panizas in 1285.
