This painting by Mariano Barbasán reflects the painter’s passion for detail and realism, evident in the early years of his career. He went on to paint many landscapes and scenes of rural life, depicting an authentic Spain that was a far cry from what one saw in the big cities. The backdrop consists of picturesque buildings that follow no particular aesthetic or urban planning principles, and in front of them lie the market stalls. Meanwhile, in the lower half of the painting, we see a muddy area crossed by a narrow channel where a young girl appears to be washing clothes.
