This piece is a sketch for the memorial to the physician Gregorio Marañón, as the class of medical students to which he belonged agreed to erect a sculpture in honor of their illustrious colleague who had recently passed away. The work depicts a portrait with a distinctly modern style, in which the face and hands are the only features that can be identified as human. The rest of the body is depicted as a roughly hewn block of stone, making it resemble a great mountain, a metaphor for the towering pillar of medicine and science that Marañón was.
