Artistic analysis

Goya depicts Saint Ignatius of Loyola in a half-length portrait, turned to his right but looking almost directly at the viewer. It retains the fundamental elements of his iconography: the dark Jesuit habit, the rosary fastened at the waist, the order’s monogram, which appears in the upper right corner, and the motto on the book, “AD MAIOREM DEI GLORIAM” [“To the greater glory of God”].

It has traditionally been accepted that the painting was commissioned for Juan Ignacio Ezcurra, as it remained in the family until the 1970s.
